South Africa Racing – Make the right choice at the Vaal

Right Choice has taken a while to come to hand but now that she has, the daughter of Global View is worth following. Two things appear to have worked for this four-year-old filly. Firstly, there was immediate improvement once trainer Mike de Kock removed and in her very next start she ended up a one-length second behind Twice As Splendid over 1160m at Turffontein.

That was in August, and when she returned from a rest she was tried over 1400m at the Vaal. But after leading through the 400m mark, she faded late to finish a 3.50-length third behind Flame Thrower.

The next run brings in the second element that brought about her improvement – rain, and plenty of it. That outing was over 1200m at the Vaal and it was run in soft going. On that occasion, she not only won her race, but pulverised her opposition by 10.75 lengths.

Her last three races were all in work riders’ events so when she next ran, which was in a MR 72 Handicap over the same course and distance where she took on the colts, she was allowed to go off at 10-1.

This time De Kock engaged Warren Kennedy to ride the filly in a race run in yielding going. Both factors worked in her favour, and she showed a lot of courage to hold off Procrastinator by a head.

On Thursday, 24 November at the Vaal, Right Choice lines up in a merit rated 74 Handicap for fillies and mares over 1200m and once again Kennedy has the ride. The average merit rating is 71, exactly the same as her previous race, and as it is against her own sex this time, De Kock’s charge could once again have the edge. And as the rainy season continues, any wet going will only work in her favour.

Two runners stand out as he main dangers – Big City Girl and What A Honey.

If Big City Girl can produce her penultimate run when beating Fantasy Flower she has to be a threat. But she barely raised a gallop in her last run when 10th behind Golden Aspen and that has to be a concern.

What A Honey won her maiden by 5.75 lengths last time in her second run back from a four-month layoff. That was only her third run so she could have lots of improvement to come.

She also won on the same day as Right Choice and on times, there is little to choose between the two.

Craig Zackey rides for the Lucky Houdalakis stable.
