South Africa Racing – Dennis may have more than Sole winner

Red Sole has been a bit costly to follow having finished second four times in a row but looks likely to go one better on Wednesday 2 February at Scottsville.

Trained by Dennis Drier, he has only raced over further since gelding and perhaps the sprint distance could see him travel comfortably for the first time in his career when he contests the first race, a Maiden over 1200m.

The Drier-family’s best horse was unbeaten Private Reserve who was blisteringly fast – she won the Grade 1 Alan Robertson at this venue. The Drier team have been quite upbeat in recent interviews and perhaps the stable is on the cusp of a form return.

Red Sole is easy to back despite taking on The Brief and Specially Selected, who have drawn well and have performed decently in strong races. The latter, especially, has been close to feature raced runners from start one to start three. However, he is racing after a rest and may just need it.

Expect a fascinating betting market as there are also interesting first timers, notably the beautifully bred Alcazar. Follow the money closely.

Drier’s next runner comes up later in Race 5, an MR83 Handicap over 1600m. Master Of Destiny is as consistent as they come but while he has run well on the poly it is his last turf outing (second last run) that stands out. He flew past re-opposing Farland and Naval Secret as if they were looking for parking space. If he takes to the Scottsville track, he should be hard to beat again. Considering his running style as well, he should have no problems.

His biggest threat could be Ralph The Rascal who runs like he is looking for the longer straight. It is, however, intriguing that this is his first try at Scottsville after 20 runs at Greyville.

Drier’s final two, Tonightsfightnight (Race 7) and Diamond Girl (Race 8), are not without chances, although the former is dropping in distance and the latter is taking on improving youngsters.

The Gavin van Zyl trained Shape Of You (Race 4), ridden by Anton Marcus, will be a popular banker bet on the day and looks the one to pair with Drier’s runners in terms of all to come place, and all to come win bets.
