South Africa Racing – Mxothwa must be brave and go early

Jockey Luyolo Mxothwa has been doing pretty well since teaming up with trainer Brett Crawford and the pair look likely to have yet another winner with Della’s Sword on Wednesday’s race meeting at Durbanville.

This country course in Cape Town favours speedy front-running types and Della’s Sword, who will be in action in Race 2, a Maiden Plate over 1000m, has proven to be just that type in her three career starts so far.

This William Longsword filly did too much too soon on her debut over the tough Kenilworth 1200m and was seen to be much more effective in her next two starts when only finding one better in both those attempts.

A tricky draw, jumping from gate 7, will probably give Mxothwa no real option other than to try and hit the front early and he is probably best advised to let her stride early and make all the running.

For punters, having a strike in a Maiden Handicap is probably the quickest route to the poor house, but there are always exceptions, and it might just be the case in Race 3 with Silent War.

Although trainer Candice Bass-Robinson has decided to double her chances by declaring Tchaikovsky to accompany Silent War, the latter seems the stable elect. It’s hard to look past this Gimmethegreenlight gelding.

With jockey Aldo Domeyer returning to the saddle, Silent War also has the benefit of having experience over the course and his recent string of runner-up finishes suggest that the long overdue maiden win is finally on the cards.

The suggested early betting advice is to get in on the double with Della’s Sword and Silent War, and to then play the exotics.
