Race 8: Korea Cup (1800M) G3 – Sand

Form Comments

KINGS SHIELD A Hong Kong galloper who has won five times at 1600M and on Dirt and all-weather tracks, he has raced forward in all his wins. An interesting runner who could make his presence felt.

INTELLOGENT Has good British middle-distance form having placed in four of his last five starts including when runner-up in the Royal Hunt Cup at Royal Ascot. He tends to get back in his races and runs on and with the speed on up front, this may well suit. Good draw and jockey has ridden here before.

DETERMINATION He won a Listed race over 2000M in March and followed up with solid form in class 2 company. He faces a serious rise in the standard of opposition here though and will need some luck.

SEKIFU Japanese horses have done very well in this race and Sekifu can keep that going having placed 2nd in the Saudi Derby and after a let up, a solid 2nd at Group 3 level over 1600M in Japan, when he was slowly away then ran home fast on the rail to just go down. He has tended to settle midfield and is right in this race.

HAENGBOK WANGJA He won a Listed race over 2000M in March and followed up with solid form in class 2 company. He faces a serious rise in the standard of opposition here though and will need some luck.

WINNER’S MAN The 2021 Korean Derby winner is a top galloper in scintillating form having won his last 4 race starts including the Herald Business Cup (2000M-L) then the YTN Cup (2000M-KG3) and last start a good win in the Mayors Cup (1800M-KG2). Likes to be on pace, good draw, and is one of the top chances here.

SUCCESS MACHO A winner of 9 from 12, he has risen rapidly through the classes, winning his first two at class one level and a good 3rd behind Winner’s Man and Simjangui Godong in the Busan Mayor’s (1800M-KG2). Last start he was surprisingly midfield in the Busan Owners’ and failed to run on – he goes much better when racing forward.

MOONHAK CHIEF A champion in Korea and the winner of this race in 2019. His best in 2022 so far is a 2nd place to Simjangui Godong at class 1 level, when giving away 8kg so the set-weights here may help but he has struggled since in two Group races. Up against it here.

CRAZY CONTI Decent record at class 1 with a very good win over this distance three starts back. He has struggled when up against the elite though and an ordinary run two weeks ago doesn’t inspire confidence.

RAON THE FIGHTER Amazingly versatile horse as he is the top sprinter in Korea yet has won to 1800M. Last start he led all the way in easily winning the Busan Owner’s Cup (1600M-KG3). A winner of eleven of thirteen starts, with bad luck playing a big role in his two defeats, he has plenty of potential for further development and he is a big chance, despite the wide draw.

SIMJANGUI GODONG Won the 2021 Presidents Cup (2000M-KG1). Ultra-consistent in 2022 with two class 1 wins and runner-up finishes to Winner’s Man in the Mayor’s Cup (1800M-KG2) and to Raon The Fighter in the Owners’ Cup (1600M-KG3), when dead-heating with King Of The Match. He is in top form and will be in the finish.

DOLKONG Hard to know what to make of this one. He was a tremendous horse who won the 2019 Curlin Handicap at Meydan and ran in that year’s Dubai World Cup. But he has been absent through injury since October of that year and while he has periodically trialed since and been in constant work since May, this is a very hard task.

KING OF THE MATCH An improving galloper just into Class 1 and surprised with a great run in the Busan Owners’ Cup (1600M-KG3), dead heating with Simjangui Godong for 2nd after settling midfield and running on. Potential for more
