The Singapore Turf Club has granted a one-day visiting jockey’s licence to New Zealand jockey Craig Grylls (pictured) to ride at the Singapore Guineas meeting on Saturday, 27 May.

The 33-year-old jockey is booked by trainer Stephen Gray to ride February in the Group 2 Singapore Guineas (1600m).

Grylls is the son of former leading New Zealand jockey Gary Grylls, who rode at the Bukit Timah racecourse in the late 1980s. After a fairy tale start when he rode his first winner as a 15-year-old at Ellerslie at only his third race ride, Grylls has gone on to ride more than 1100 winners in 18 years in the saddle, including 13 at Group 1 level.

His latest Group 1 victory came atop the Stephen Marsh-trained Ulanova two months ago in the Sistema Stakes, which he won previously with Kaaptan in 2009. Grylls also took out the New Zealand Derby twice, first on board Crown Prosecutor in 2019, before repeating the success atop Rocket Spade in 2021.

Grylls is no stranger to the Kranji racecourse as he rode here in 2017 and 2018 when he won 44 races.

Currently licensed by New Zealand Thoroughbred Racing, Grylls sits in second position on 106 winners on the New Zealand jockeys’ premiership. He has also ridden in Australia and Macau.

Grylls goes to scale at 54kgs.
