The Singapore Turf Club has granted a one-day visiting jockey licence to Australian jockey Hugh Bowman (pictured on left) to ride at the Singapore Derby and Singapore Golden Horseshoe meeting next Sunday, 23 July.

Bowman will ride the Tim Fitzsimmons-trained Golden Monkey in the third and final Leg of the Singapore Four-Year-Old Challenge, the Group 1 Singapore Derby (1800m).

Hugh Bowman

Four-time Sydney champion jockey Hugh Bowman, 43, is the 2017 Longines World’s Best Jockey and recipient of the inaugural Bart Cummings Medal in 2008-2009, but is probably better remembered as retired champion mare Winx’s regular partner.

Once an apprentice jockey to former champion jockey-turned trainer Ron Quinton, the Dunedoo-born Bowman now boasts over 2,300 winners to his name in over 20 years of riding, including more than 100 wins at Group 1 level. Some of his notable victories were four Cox Plates (2015 to 2018) aboard Winx, two Champions and Chater Cup astride Russian Emperor (2023) and Werther (2017), four Queen Elizabeth Stakes with Winx (2017 to 2019) and Reliable Man (2013), and two Hong Kong Derby aboard Furore (2019) and Werther (2016).

Well-travelled, Bowman has also ridden winners in different corners of the globe, including England, Mauritius, South Africa and Japan where he won the famous Japan Cup aboard Grand Cheval in 2017. The 2019 Australian Racing Hall of Fame inductee was also often invited to ride in Singapore, most recently at the Premier Gateway International Jockeys Challenge in September 2018, albeit his sole winner in Singapore remains to be the Steven Burridge-trained Lim’s Showcase on 12 July 2015.

Also a winner of the 2016 Longines International Jockeys’ Championship in Hong Kong, Bowman has been plying his trade at the former British colony since November last year and now ranks third on the Hong Kong jockeys’ premiership with 60 winners this season.

He goes to scale at 57kgs.
