The second leg of the Triple Crown series takes place in Selangor on Sunday, with the running of the Group 1 Selangor Gold Cup (1600m).

The Triple Crown Series consists of the three Classic Group 1 races of the Selangor Turf Club. The first leg, the Tunku Gold Cup (1200m) was held on May 23, 2023. The final leg is the Piala Emas Sultan Selangor (2000m) to be run later this year.

Appropriately themed “where sprinters meet stayers”, the series is an open race for three years olds and above with rating band 71 and above, run over three varying distances of 1200 metres for the Tunku Gold Cup, 1600 metres for the Selangor Gold Cup and finally the 2000 metres for the Piala Emas Sultan Selangor. The Selangor Gold Cup offers prize money of RM150,000.

Since it’s inception in 2003, however, no horse has won the Triple Crown series. In 2005 Superb Classic, trained by the late Cecil Robert, won the first two legs of the series, which is as close as any horse has got to winning the Triple Crown.

Attracting 21 entries, a full field of 16 runners is anticipated to go to post in the coveted event.
