There are numerous contenders in the G1 Selangor Gold Cup (1600m), with three Group winners participating in the featured event.
Last year’s G1 Tunku Gold Cup winner, AWESOME STORM, arguably Malaysia’s premier sprinter over the past two seasons, will carry the top weight (60kg) and will be racing over the mile for the first time.
Recent G1 Penang Sprint trophy winner, BERRY BLISS, is in career-best form and has been freshened since that victory. This year’s G1 Tunku Gold Cup winner, SAN ANDREAS, faltered in his last start but has maintained solid form, including his third-place finish in the Penang Sprint Trophy.
The weights will play a significant role in Sunday’s feature, with some progressive contenders enjoying substantial weight advantages over their higher-rated rivals.
PASIR PINJI, boasting an excellent Malaysian record of eight wins from ten starts, makes his Group One debut, while LEOPARD ECLIPSE backs up from his 1400m victory last Saturday. Stablemate SACRED GURU broke the winning drought when defeating SINCERELY a fortnight ago and both could provide value in the lightweight division.
Payout in Golden form
Promising galloper GOLDEN PAYOUT appears to be on track for another victory as he prepares to compete in the 1500m Class 4 contest in Kuala Lumpur on Sunday.
GOLDEN PAYOUT has made rapid progress through the grades since his local debut just over 12 months ago. The five-year-old missed the start slightly when resuming after a seven-month break but managed to finish third over 1275m on the inner track.
He quickly made up for that defeat with a convincing win over 1100m on August 5. The Charles Leck-trained performer had previously failed once over the 1500m trip, but he was still a maiden at the time and has shown significant improvement since gaining more race experience.
