From winning an Open Maiden in January 2021 at Kranji to claiming the coveted Group 1 Selangor Gold Cup on Sunday, it’s an extraordinary tale of seven-year-old gelding PASIR PINJI.

The former Donna Logan-trained galloper could only manage that one win in Singapore and continued to slide down the ratings into Class 5 before he departed for Malaysia on a rating of 36. A year ago this month, PASIR PINJI made a winning start to his Malaysian career, and was a further seven-time winner before Sunday’s big-race success.

Storming to victory in the second leg of the Triple Crown series on Sunday, PASIR PINJI is now an outright Group 1 winner. It was the first Gold Cup triumph for trainer Simon Dunderdale, while winning jockey, Brazilian hoop Bernardo Piheiro, now boasts two Gold Cups to his name after claiming it in 2019 aboard Truson.
