Runway Bomb is another runner brought up from the Cape that has been a revelation since joining Tony Peter’s Turffontein yard.
The three-year-old daughter of Lancaster Bomber joined the Peter at the beginning of June and since then has raced six times for the stable, notching up three wins, two seconds and a third place. What is even more remarkable is that even in her three defeats, she has not finished further behind the winner than 0.50 lengths.
But having said that, her three victories have also been by less than a length which indicates she is the kind of runners who just does enough to win. Off course, that is also great for and owner and trainer because it means the handicappers cannot penalise her too harshly for her victories.
As a result, when she comes into Race 6 at the Vaal on Tuesday, a MR 92 Handicap for fillies and mares over 1400m, Runway Bomber could still be well treated at the weights.
She has proved to be very versatile having won races over distances from 1200m to 1450m and at a number of different courses, sometimes around the bend or up the straight.
This 1400m is up the straight which makes it quite a fast-run race. But Runway Bomber, who will be looking for her third successive victory, comes into the race with just 54.5kg on her back and that makes her highly competitive.
Calvin Habib takes the ride for the first time.
Once you look past her this race is wide open and there are a number of candidates in this eight-horse field who could fill the placings.
Topweight What A Honey has to be considered as she has been taking on stronger than she will meet on this occasion. The only issue is she seems to lost some of her sharpness and has finished out of the placings in her last three starts.
Unfortunately, the handicappers have not dropped her merit rating at all despite those unplaced efforts. Nevertheless, if she does find her previous good form, she has to be a lively contender.
Craig Zackey takes the ride once again.
