Trainer Frank Maynard can look forward to this year’s Tunku Gold Cup after CHINESE TEA’s impressive win in the Metro A set-weight event over 1200m at Selangor.
The Australian-bred gelding by Magnus was unplaced behind AWESOME STORM and SAN ANDREAS in the last two editions of the Group One 1200m sprint, but Maynard seems to have him in good health and trending in the right direction.
“He’s had a couple of little issues and it’s good to get him back in good form,” said Maynard.
“It was a good win. He was strong to the line and he is heading for the Tunku Gold Cup now. “I might even put blinkers on him to sharpen him a little bit more.
“By the time the Cup comes around he will be in good form with all the issues sorted out. He is on the improve and can race on pace so he is perfect for the Cup.”
With EYE GUY taking up his customary roll on the lead, and favourite AWESOME STORM in close attendance, CHINESE TEA positioned third when they worked out their order.
AWESOME STORM ranged alongside EYE GUY at the 800m, and the pair led into the straight, but CHINESE TEA was there to pounce and cleared out to a two-length win in the end.
