Former Singapore galloper, Trumpy, struggled to find success in 39 starts at Kranji, managing only one win. However, he finally clinched a trophy victory by dominating the Group 1 Perak Derby (2000m) on Sunday.
With four listed wins in Argentina, Trumpy achieved Class 1 placings three times and finished fourth in the Singapore Gold Cup in both 2020 and 2022. Now under the guidance of Lawson Moy’s Selangor-based stable, the eight-year-old seems to have found his niche for the Buffalo Stable.
Lerner’s well-timed ride allowed Trumpy to settle off the pace while other former Singapore-trained gelding Red Ocean set a fast tempo and Leopard Eclipse gave chase.

Trumpy surged past Leopard Eclipse in the final stretch, winning by three lengths, while Black Thorn rallied from the rear to secure third place.
Trumpy broke through first-up in Malaysia in a 1400m event with Kranji-based rider Marc Lerner aboard, and the pair were reunited seven weeks later for Ipoh’s feature race on Sunday, which made a comeback after several years of hiatus.
Moy, Lerner, and the Buffalo Stable continued their red-hot form by striking twice on the card, winning one race later with the eight-year-old Fireworks, who was second-up in Malaysia and continued his affinity over the 1400m distance by winning his 10th race over the trip.
