Following a successful program of racing at Selangor Turf Club last Sunday, which featured 9-year-old galloper CHEVAL BLANC chalking up his second Group One success in the Tunku Gold Cup, a lower-key program of racing returns to the inner track (Track Two) this Sunday.
A 1020m Class 3 contest (Race 5) headlines the seven-race card, with the major contenders at the top end of the weight scale.
Despite finishing unplaced as the beaten favorite here a month ago, HIGH WATER (3) has the capacity to bounce back to winning form. The 6-year-old was a Metro A winner on the inner track in February, defeating Gold Cup contender Sincerely, and will be aided by the 3kg claim for apprentice Tuan Ammar.
WECANDO (2) is coming off an encouraging effort against a strong Class 3 lineup last Sunday and will find this race more to his liking. WECANDO (2) actually won the race in which HIGH WATER contested recently and appears a genuine chance on the quick backup.
LIM’S UNIQUE goes up to this grade for the first time but is racing in career-best form this year with 3 wins from 5 starts.
KASSAB (1) has finished close up in two local starts and will be freshened since finishing 3rd behind WECANDO (2) on March 24.
FLYING DURUMI (6) recaptured his best form when flashing home to finish runner-up in that same race and is a proven performer at this grade in the past.
Race 5 Selections: (3) HIGH WATER (2) WECANDO (8) LIM’S UNIQUE (1) KASSAB
Progressive 3-year-old, STARLIGHT GLIMMER (3), appears on target to record a winning hat-trick in the 1150m Class 4A (Race 4). The grey gelding has won three out of six overall, with his last two wins on the inner track, and from pole position should prove hard to beat.
IRONCLAD (5) was placed over 1400m here last Sunday and continues to chalk up a number of minor placings since his last win back in August last year. The 8-year-old has scored on the inner track previously, and Oscar Chavez retains the mount.
SYMBOL OF COURAGE (4) is a reliable beginner and has been leading in recent performances, so he may have to be used up from a wider draw.
CAORUNN (6) is coming off successive Class 4 wins, while VETRI (9) appears the best chance of the lightweights.
Race 4 Selections: (3) STARLIGHT GLIMMER (5) IRONCLAD (4) SYMBOL OF COURAGE (6) CAORUNN
IRON SAMURAI (1) looks well-suited returning to Class 5 company in Race 6 over the 1020m journey. The 5-year-old was beaten a length when finishing on the heels of the place-getters in a Class 4B contest three weeks ago and has also won twice in three starts on Track Two.
NINGALOO (2), an Ipoh winner two starts back, is likely to charge forward at the start and is expected to improve on his last run.
SHANGANI (7) is a moderate beginner and needs a fast pace to close off, while STARDICE (4) was an 1100m winner here recently and has been attracting market support.
Race 6 Selections: (1) IRON SAMURAI (2) NINGALOO (7) SHANGANI (4) STARDICE
