Trainer Bjorn Baker is gearing up for a significant day at Ascot this Saturday, as he prepares to defend the Quokka title with his seasoned five-year-old gelding, Overpass. Adding to his arsenal, Baker will also be fielding Malkovich, providing solid support to the stable’s campaign.

Overpass, sired by the Golden Slipper victor Vancouver, boasts an impressive $5.6 million in prize money. Since his triumph in last year’s inaugural Quokka, he has competed in four races, notably securing second place in both the Doomben 10,000 and The Shorts, narrowly missing out on victory each time.

Despite being bested, Overpass’s performances against such high-caliber competitors speak volumes about his talent. His quest for glory led him to the prestigious $20 million The Everest, although the challenge proved too daunting on that occasion. However, returning to his familiar stomping ground at Ascot, Overpass reclaimed his winning form by clinching victory in the Group 1 Winterbottom Stakes, marking his seventh career triumph while maintaining an unbeaten record at Ascot.

This Saturday marks Overpass’s first outing of the season, a scenario in which he has excelled in the past, finishing in the top two in five of his six previous first-up starts. With seasoned jockey Josh Parr back in the saddle, expectations are high for another stellar performance.

Meanwhile, Malkovich, an accomplished eight-time winner with nearly $1 million in earnings, is primed for the challenge in his fifth start of the season. Recent outings have showcased his competitiveness, including a third-place finish in the Group 3 Southern Cross Stakes, a commendable third in the Group 2 Expressway, and a runner-up position in the Group 3 Star Kingdom Stakes.

With Ben Melham taking the reins, Malkovich enters the Quokka fray with confidence and determination, serving as a worthy complement to Overpass. As anticipation builds, betting apps currently place Overpass at $4.60, trailing behind the favored Amelia’s Jewel at $3.40, while Malkovich holds steady at $26.
