The Selangor Turf Club is set to step-up and transform itself into one of the leading horse racing centres in Asia.
Speaking at the Club’s Annual General Meeting (AGM) on 27 June 2024, Chairman, Tan Sri Datuk Richard Cham Hak Lim informed Club Members that with the cessation of horse racing in Singapore and Macau and now probably Penang, an influx of horses can be anticipated at the Club due to Selangor Turf Club’s proximity to these Clubs.
He stressed that these unexpected developments have thrown the spotlight on Selangor Turf Club’s ability to step-up and transform itself into one of the leading horse racing centres in Asia and the need for the Club to offer its patrons an attractive venue with excellent facilities.
At the meeting, he also reported on the activities or projects undertaken by the Club in the current year. Among them are :-
- The Club signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with International Medical University (IMU) on 9 January 2024, providing an opportunity for SLTC Veterinary Department’s National Equine Hospital to teach, exchange materials and expertise in developing the Bachelor of Bio Veterinary Science programme at IMU.
- In an effort to encourage the importation of quality young horses into the country and to boost the horse population, the Club re-launched the 3-Year-Old and 4-Year-Old races after a hiatus of five years.
- The Selangor Turf Club resumed racing on the Main Track on 9 June 2024. The Main Track was closed since 15 April 2024 for upgrading and returfing from 550m to the Finishing Post. The upgrading work includes improvement of the subsoil drainage as the speed of the drainage of rain water is crucial in ensuring rapid resumption of the track usability for racing.
- The Club replaced its pari-mutuel wagering system with QuantumTM tote engine. The adoption of a new wagering system enable the Club to reach more overseas partners and provide the access to a global marketplace of international pari-mutuel pool commingling which is critical to sustain racing in Malaysia.
