July 14 Perak Preview By Mark Lydeamore

The 1200m Hibiscus Stakes (Race 4) is the high grade race this Sunday at Perak Turf Club with a nine race program commencing at 1.15pm.

QUICKEN AWAY (3) can bounce back to winning form providing he strikes a dry surface. The former Australian galloper has struck a wet track in his past two runs and appeared uncomfortable on the soft track a fortnight ago. TEOCHEW KID (1) looked one-paced when resuming over 1400m but with the distance and weight drop, he will strip fitter and can improve on that performance. VINCENT’S STAR (4) is a promising three year old which was a fraction unlucky when placed 7th in the Listed Pacific Sprint won by Antipodean. An 1100m Class 4 winner down the straight course prior to that, VINCENT’S STAR (4) will be competitive against the higher graders and should not be underestimated. AHTIMS KLIS (2) has class on its side and is on the seven day back up. The mare will find this an easier assignment but normally performs better over a longer trip. LEONG MA BISCUIT (5) did not disgrace at his local debut and is sure to run well again.

Race 4 Selections: (3) QUICKEN AWAY — (1) TEOCHEW KID — (4) VINCENT’S STAR — (2) AHTIMS KLIS

Veteran campaigner, DISCRETELY RED (5) is racing in good form as he aims for the hat trick in the 1600m Tetley Handicap (Race 5). Versatile in all forms of going, the 10yo will be hard to beat again. MANDRAKE (3) finished unplaced behind DISCRETELY RED (5) here at the last meeting but should improve with the distance rise and can reverse the result. RAGNAR (1) returns to Class 4 grade and was placed at group level last year so looks a chance with the top weight. LOOKS GOOD (7) and SUCCESS STREET (8) have never won at this level as both runners are coming off last start Class 5 wins. GOLDEN LIGHTNING (6) has early speed and can surprise at value.

Race 5 Selections: (3) MANDRAKE — (5) DISCRETELY RED — (1) RAGNAR — (7) LOOKS GOOD

HARVEYWALLBANGER (3) finally gets his chance to bounce back in the 1000m Dandelion Handicap (Race 9) after finishing runner up here last start. CASTLE OCEAN (4), which resumes from an eight month spell, will provide the speed influence and is likely to lead so from barrier two, HARVEYWALLBANGER (3) should be well placed in the run as he aims for his tenth career victory. KNIGHT LOVE (2) ran 4th in the same race contested by HARVEYWALLBANGER (3) but has the wide draw to overcome. GOLD SKY EXPRESS (8) and KING POWER (1) are both on speed performers and are trifecta chances while FLYING SPIDER (6) has been freshened and draws pole position.
