In a bold move to elevate the standard of horse racing, the Selangor Turf Club (SLTC) has unveiled its transformative blueprint, ‘Drive to Excellence’, which sets the course for significant developments over the next four years, starting in 2024. This strategic plan outlines comprehensive changes across several key areas, designed to enhance the racing experience, attract top talent, and increase the competitiveness of the sport.

Prize Money Boosts Across the Board

One of the headline features of the plan is the substantial increase in prize money. Starting from 2024, the prize purse for standard races will rise from RM25,000 to RM30,000 per race. This is only the beginning, as by 2025, the average prize money per non-Feature race is set to increase to RM45,000 (Phase I), with a further rise to RM55,000 (Phase II). In addition, SLTC has committed to introducing a minimum of one RM1,000,000 race, which is expected to draw significant attention.

Black-Type (Feature) races are also in line for a substantial upgrade, with total prize money set to increase from RM1.3 million in 2024 to RM3 million (Phase I) and further to RM4.2 million (Phase II) in 2025—representing an over 200% increase in prize funds.

Overall, total prize money for the club is expected to see a remarkable growth from RM17 million in 2024 to RM31 million (Phase I) and RM38.5 million (Phase II) in 2025.

New Initiatives and Facilities Enhancements

The ‘Drive to Excellence’ plan also includes several new initiatives aimed at fostering growth in the sport. These include the introduction of 3YO, 4YO, and 5YO racing series, designed to provide focused competition for younger horses. Accompanying this will be special bonuses for 3YO and 4YO participants, further incentivizing owners and trainers to develop younger talent.

In addition to these racing developments, SLTC has also announced a new wagering system to modernize and improve the betting experience for fans. Alongside these operational upgrades, the club will invest in significant facilities improvements to ensure that the racing experience—both for participants and spectators—is second to none.

The Road Ahead

With these substantial investments in prize money, infrastructure, and new racing opportunities, SLTC’s ‘Drive to Excellence’ represents a significant step forward for horse racing in Malaysia. The blueprint sets the stage for enhanced competition, improved amenities, and an overall better experience for the racing community.

As these changes come into effect in 2024, the SLTC is well-positioned to become a premier destination for racing excellence in the region, attracting top-tier talent and growing the sport’s popularity both locally and internationally.
